The Persian – Personality and Care

persian catsIt’s quite easy to fall in love with such an elegant cat, the Persian surely is. This long-haired beauty originated in the Mesopotamia, later known as Persia and modern-day Iran, the cradle of civilization. The Persian is a mid-size cat breed, weighing from 7 to 12 pounds with a life span of 10 to 15 years. If you are considering adopting or buying one of those beauties, here are few things you should know about their personality and required care!

The Persian is known for being docile, dignified, sweet and quiet. This cat is an ornament to any household and you will most often see her while sitting in a lap and being petted by those she choose. Persians are lovely, but they reserve attention for their family members and several guests they see as trustworthy. They prefer a serene home to loud environments. If they want to play, eat or cuddle, they will let their owners know it with expressive, large eyes and a soft, musical and pleasant voice. Unlike most other cats, Persian won’t climb the curtains, perch on top of a refrigerator and jump on the kitchen counters. This cat is perfectly happy to adorn a sofa, chair or bed until someone gives her attention.

It’s very important to groom a Persian on a daily basis, since their beautiful coat cannot stay tangle-free and clean on its own. A regular bathing, about once a month, would be recommended, while you should comb and brush them every day. Litter box can become an issue if it’s not kept scrupulously clean. Since litter may become lodged in coat or paws, it can annoy Persians and make them simply stop using the box. To prevent periodontal disease, brush your pets teeth at least once a week, although daily dental care would be better. Also, wipe the corners of your cat’s eyes daily, since excessive tearing can lead to forming of under-eye stains.

There are many reasons to keep a Persian as a strictly indoor cat. First of all, their coat is not made for shedding dirt, stickers and leaves, so if you let a Persian outdoors, you will have to spend more time grooming the cat. Also, they are not scrappers and would fare poorly against other animals.
