Pug Dog Breed – Basic Info

Pug Dog infoA lot of a dog in a small space – it’s how Pug dogs are best described. It seems that the world went mad about these cute dogs with comical face, flat round face and deep wrinkles around dark, big eyes. Indeed, whenever I look at a Pug, I can’t help but smile! The name Pug probably comes from the Latin word for fist, obviously, because its face resembles a human fist.

Although they are clowns at heart, Pugs carry themselves with dignity. They are playful and can be active, but more than that they are lovers who need to be close to their humans. Not only do Pugs love to be the center of attention, but they can also become heartsick if you ignore them. These dogs usually weigh no more than 20 pounds. Pugs are thickset and square with large and round heads and eyes. Distinct and deep wrinkles characterize them and the legend has it that wrinkles resembled good luck symbols in Chinese language. Have you noticed the moles on pugs’ cheeks are often called beauty spots. Their ears are black, velvety and smooth. As a rule, they have an undershot jaw.

When it comes to personality, Pugs are affectionate, happy, charming, loyal, mischievious and playful. Although they are very intelligent, they can also be willful – that’s what makes Pug training challenging. Your neighbors will appreciate the fact that, although small, Pugs are not yappy. In fact, if well-socialized and trained, these dogs can get along well with other dogs and animals, as well as with kids. Also, they are the best choice for apartment dwellers, since they are quiet, small and relatively inactive when home. What’s more, they should be kept indoors, because they don’t do well in extremely cold or hot weather. I somehow compare them to cats – they are those little furry little creatures that will sleep tightly in your lap while you’re reading a book or watching a TV show.

If you have chosen to live with a Pug, think about investing in a good quality vacuum cleaner – even though they have a double, short coat, they are known for shedding excessively.
