1. The Breed was Developed by a Duke
The dog breed weimaraner was actually a new breed, which appeared first in the 19th century. Grand Duke, Karl August, of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, who was a passionate hunter, developed this breed as a gun dog. Initially developed as a hunting aide for big game, weimaraner later settled in the role of a domestic companion.
2. The Other Name of Weimaraners is “Gray Ghost”
Weimaraners are characterized by a distinct skin color. As per the breed standard of American Kennel Club, the coat of weimaraners needs to be smooth, sleek, short and in solid color in shades of silver-gray to mouse-gray, normally mixed lighter shades on ears and head.
3. A Blue Coat is a Defect
Weimaraners can be easily recognized by their distinct coat which ranges from a brownish gray to bluish gray. However, the bluish color is actually supposed to be a defect and blue weimaraners cannot participate in dog shows. As per the American Kennel Club standards, blue or black coat is a disqualifying factor for weimaraners.
4. Weimaraners are the Fastest Runners among All Dog Breeds

5. Weimaraners were Popularized in America in WWII
A weimaraner was first imported to America by Howard Knight, a Rhode Island based hunter, in 1929 from Germany. However, until WWII, the breed didn’t get much popularity in the United States. Then several American soldiers while returning home brought weimaraners with them because they loved the breed due to its loyalty and athletic skills. It was this time when the popularity of the breed grew in America.
