Flea and Tick Controlling Tips

flea and tick controlSpring and summer are lovely seasons to enjoy outdoor activities with your family and pets. However, it’s important not to forget to take steps that help protect your lovely furry companions against nasty fleas and ticks. Left too long, these parasites can cause some serious diseases and I’m quite sure nobody wants that to happen. Here are some tips on controlling fleas and ticks on your pets!

Clear the Garden/Yard/Home – Keeping your yard clear and clean is not only nice and aesthetically pleasing, but it can also help control your home’s outdoor flea and tick population. I wouldn’t suggest using outdoor chemical treatments, though, since these products may have harmful and toxic effects in case of an accidental contact. Trimming lawns, trees and bushes is quite enough. Keep in mind that fleas and ticks are incredibly difficult to get rid of, so it’s important to continually clean your home, too. In order to successfully eradicate fleas and ticks, it’s recommended to throw out the bag after you vacuum your home thoroughly. Your pets’ bedding and toys should be washed with soapy, warm water on regular basis. Finally, don’t forget to vacuum your car.

For that reason, you need to find the right flea and tick control product for your cats and dogs. These products are available in many forms, but most common ones are: shampoos, sprays, dust, spot-on products, collars and tags (such as a highly recommended Pet Protector). Make sure you carefully read and follow the product label if you use it on your pets. For example, you shouldn’t use dog products for cats, because some pesticides are toxic to cats, while harmless to dogs. After applying or putting on the products, especially if you’re using it on your pet for the first time, monitor any signs of sensitivity or side effects.
