Snow and winter walks usually present the joyful and fun experience for many dogs. Outdoor exercises are certainly needed because they help them staying healthy and in form, but also releasing some of the energy. Some Arctic, herding and sporting breeds have whether winter “designed” coats or dense undercoats keeping them dry and warm. Other dog breeds need to be protected during cold windy days. Outwear for comfort and warmth is usually necessary if dogs do not have their own fur coats. If the dog shivers on moderately cold Autumn days, it is clear that an averagely chilly winter day he/she would need an extra protection and encouragement to go for a walk. If he/she likes wearing dog clothes and being dressed this will not be a problem, those who do not like it have to learn to tolerate wearing coats.
Some breeds are extra sensitive and for them wearing warming doggy clothes is preferable not only outdoors, but even indoors. Chinese Crested Hairless, Chihuahuas or Italian Greyhounds and other small dogs will feel more safe and comfortable if wearing dog snuggies or sweaters all the time. Common dog coats cover the sides and the back and have belt wrapped around to keep them in place. Upper abdomen and the chest can be also covered with an extra flap. Sweaters, especially those bulky-knit and heavyweight are practical because they do not have any belts, buttons or straps that usually irritate dogs and they are very warm. Dog snuggies are sweaters with sleeves made of ultra warm and soft fleece. If the dog’s skin is prone to infections or just sensitive, dog snuggie is a good solution because it does not irritate hair and skin and therefore it is suitable for wearing the whole day long.
