Keeping a Rabbit: The Basics of Pet Rabbit Care

For many people, who for some reason can’t get a cat or a dog as a pet, rabits become a popular choice. Rabbits keep you good company and can also be trained, just like cats and dogs. As a matter of fact, they become really good friends with their masters.

There are a lot of breeds of rabbits, where each one has its different traits and behaviors. Here it is quite essential for the pet owner to be emotionally and physically prepared to commit themselves towards the pet rabbit care throughout the creature’s life span. Just to get you started, I have prepared a list with some of the most important things to remember about rabbit care:

Shelter for Rabbits

It is highly recommended to keep your rabbit inside your house or at some other warm place because it is unable to bear the weather changes if left outdoors.  Only the wild rabbits can handle the rough weather changes, so keep in mind that the domesticated ones need to be protected all the time. There are many different sizes of rabbit cages available in almost every pet store. When choosing a suitable cage, consider the size of your rabbit and make sure there will be enough space for it to move around freely. In addition to that, you will have to clean the rabbit’s cage every couple of weeks.

Ensuring the Good Health of Pet Rabbits

It is well-known that the domesticated rabbits easily fall ill if they eat something that’s not compatible with their digestive system. In order to avoid this common rabbit health issue, you must thoroughly research what food you are supposed to give to your pet rabbit. Some common foods are timothy hay, lettuce, carrots, parsley, apple tree twigs, pears, and strawberries etc. For baby rabbits, you should buy pellets and give these to them in really small quantities.

Pet Rabbit Handling

One of the most important things to remember about rabbits is that they are very fragile and gentle and that is why extra care is required when handling them. It is also known that they get lonely from time to time, so it’s best to keep them in pairs.

Grooming Pet Rabbits

When it comes to grooming rabbits, their fur needs to be brushed and their ears cleaned on regular basis. Brushing the fur is important, because rabbits can fall ill because they swallow fur balls. A regular visit to the veterinarian is also necessarry to make sure your pet is healthy.

All this is only basic information about what you need to do to ensure that your pet rabbit will live longer and will be healthy. A good final tip is to always be present when your children play with your pet rabbit since the rabbits are very gentle and can easily get hurt.
