Housing a Gecko Pet

One of the most popular reptiles held as pets are geckos, because they are quite easy to tame and care for. They live longer than many other lizards, with an average life span of 10 to 20 years and they are also unique because of the ability to communicate with other geckos by making chirping sounds. Leopard gecko is perhaps the most popular reptile pet, but other species, such as house gecko and crested gecko, have become increasingly popular as well. However, before deciding to buy a gecko as a pet, you should know what is necessary for housing this lovely pet. Comparing to the cost of animal itself, the equipment you need for a gecko pet may be quite expensive. Reptile supplies and vivarium are very important and it is always recommended to buy the high quality equipment, as it will be long lasting and your pet will have the appropriate environment to live healthy and happy life.
The size of the tank depends on the size and gecko species, as well as the right amount of light, humidity and heat. Regular temperature monitoring is necessary and it should range from around 25 C at night and 27 C in day. A 15-20 gallon tank is commonly sufficient for two or three geckos, but if you can afford and keep larger one, it would be even better. Climbing obstacles, hiding places (in particular a damp area) should be provided, as well as an appropriate lightning as geckos are normally active at night. You can choose the naturalist furnishings, but the fact is that manufactured ones are easier to maintain. Indoor carpet and paper are good substrates, while things like wood shavings and sand should be avoided when keeping young geckos. Small, not too deep water bowl should be kept inside the vivarium and replaced with fresh water twice daily.
