Be Ideal Dog-owner – Take Responsibilities!

When our pet dogs are concerned, though it may not seem very pleasant, we have to be careful about dangerously behaving dogs. I recently read a very good article about this subject, in which it was rightly stated that the responsibility of dangerously behaving dogs is of their owners and also that we should breed only those dogs that have sound and correct temperaments.

Regarding behavior, mutts too can have similar behavioral problems like that of purebred dogs. Some things are really essential about dogs, such as, breeding of sound and safe tempered dogs, correct socialization for puppies from 8 weeks to 16 weeks (which is their crucial socialization period) and train the dog continuously throughout its life. If the dog is showing symptoms that it is becoming dangerous or will become dangerous, it is the owner’s responsibility to handle the dog correctly for the safety of public and to make use of training and behavior modification to try to minimize or resolve the behavioral issue. And this must be done with the help of an appropriately qualified professional.

It is not true that a particular dog breed is dangerous. Any breed can contain dangerous dogs, which includes mutts too.

We also require to treat dogs like dogs and not like little children. Whether the dog is small or big, it is a dog and should be treated as one. People always laugh at the dangerous behavior of a small dog and minimize it, which would have been terrible for them in case of a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler. Dangerous is dangerous anyway, regardless of the dog’s size.

The jobs of different breeds of dogs can be varying. Difference lies in aggression and guarding or protection.  Real guarding dog must be well trained and should have sound temperament. It should be responding to its handler and must not attack haphazardly. And importantly it must be safe in public, for children and other dogs.

It should also be remembered that there are dogs which need space from people as well as from other dogs. Some of the dogs are in process of behavior modification and training and aren’t still comfortable with other dogs or people. Some may have a medical condition that makes them uneasy behaving with people and other dogs. We should consider all these situations and should respect them.

Therefore, you should keep in mind to respect if the response to your or your dog’s attempt to be friendly with the other dog is ‘no’. You should take the responsibility of your dog and keep it on leash or inside your house or yard as required. You should take into consideration that just because you or your dog wants to be friendly with other people or dogs doesn’t mean that other people or dog too should be comfortable with your friendship or interaction. This can be called a true responsible behavior.
