Dog House Training – A Job of Patience

A Special Spot

Allot a special spot for your dog to do his “business” and make sure that s/he knows that you want him/her to do the business only there and nowhere else.

Make Her/Him Habituated

Make a habit to take him to the spot after 10 to 30 minutes every time s/he eats or sleeps and wait there till s/he goes. After s/he does, admire him. Offer her/him a small food treat. However, ensure that the dog is not eliminating just to grab the treat, because that way s/he does minimal elimination and after getting the treat, may pee or defecate more elsewhere. Take care to be patient with the dog and not angry.

Taking Her/Him Out

Make a habit of taking the dog out every 2-3 hours. After some time, s/he will want to go to the washroom outside.

When You are not with Her/Him for More than 3 Hours

If you will be out of home or sleeping for more than 2-3 hours, put the dog in a crate, if s/he is crate-trained or in an enclosed room with papers lining the floor. That way, either your dog will be discouraged from eliminating, when you are not with her/him or decrease the amount of cleanup if s/he does. Consider employing a dog walker who can take the dog out if you want to go for a longer time.

Pay Attention to Signs

Your dog may give some signs when s/he wants to eliminate. Pay attention to those signs. Sniffing, revolving around herself/himself or crouching are some of the common signs.

Understanding

When you see the dog doing, don’t panic or get annoyed but take her/him out on a leash and bring her/him to a correct spot outside. Take her/him every time to the same place. That way, s/he will smell her/his own scent.

Patience

Though you have decided to make a habit to take your dog out on a particular time, if s/he wants to just lie down in the yard at that time, let her/him do so and take her/him out afterwards.

House training your dog is a job to do with patience. You may get irritated and annoyed with the dog, because of the mess you have to clean up. However, understand that your dog is an animal and is not as smart as humans. It may take a short or long time to train her/him, but if you do it patiently, the love bond between you and your dog will grow.
