If your beloved dog is very active and prone to injuries, or is of very delicate nature and becomes ill time and again, buying insurance for her/him is a good idea, because ultimately it’s going to save your money. However, you might be daunted with a thought of dog insurance and will feel enlightened if you get a few tips. So, here they are.
Types of Dog Insurance
Dog insurance offers four types of coverage:
- Accident Only: This is the basic cover you will get and covers the expense of the veterinary treatment following an accident. But this insurance doesn’t cover the treatment expenses for illnesses. Even some policies have a time constraint and a fixed amount of money is to pay for the treatment of an accidental injury.
- Per Condition having a Time Limit: This insurance is one of the least expensive and pays for the vet’s fees for illnesses as well as accidents; however, it is active only for 12 months maximum, after your dog is diagnosed. In this insurance, there is often a maximum payout. So, if the treatment cost exceeds that limit, you have to pay the extra from your own pocket.
- Per Condition with No Time Limit: In this insurance, there is a set fee limit, but no time limit. So, regardless of for how long the treatment goes on, the cover continues for that period. But you have to renew the policy after 12 months. However, recurring injuries or illnesses are not covered by this insurance type.
- Lifetime: This is the most comprehensive kind of dog insurance. But it is also the priciest one. The insurance provider sets a very high amount every year, but still you should renew the policy annually and some providers can even refuse to renew. Some policies may also offer cover for dental treatment expenses or burial costs.
Is Pet Insurance Necessary?
Actually it depends on you. Dogs may need treatments costing hundreds of bucks. They often undergo road traffic accidents. And there are more serious situations too like hip dysplasia which costs thousands. If still more serious condition like cancer is diagnosed, the treatment may exceed tens of thousands.
However, not all pets and their parents are that unlucky, as they need to go to a vet only a few times and their vet bills are usually quite low.
