Dog Training Methods – How to Choose Right?

A new puppy in your home is an amazing experience; everybody’s focused on that new four-legged family member. Dogs are delightful bundles of curiosity and energy, but some things they do can also be quite frustrating. Clearly, your puppy needs to know what’s right and wrong, so it’s important to find the training method that will help both of you. Nevertheless, once new owners start looking for the right training style, most of them end up confused. Which one to choose? Which one is the most effective, yet safe and beneficial to everyone?

In general there are three methods of dog training nowadays: traditional, modern and balanced. The majority of the pet trainers have turned to the modern techniques, but still there are some traditional trainers, in the real world and online. Traditional trainers don’t really appreciate science based and modern methods, because their old methods do work. In addition, they see themselves as rescuers of those owners who got into troubles while applying modern training methods. To be honest, they do tell truth about that, because many people fail to train their pets using modern methods.

On the other hand, modern dog trainers are frustrated by the lack of understanding traditional dog trainers show when it comes to principles of behavioral modification. And, of course, they see themselves as the rescuers of all those owners whose dogs are mentally scarred due to the abusive training methods. And, yes, they are right, too. There are many dogs that act and feel demoralized and distressed because they were physically pushed around.

What I’m trying to say is that there are two sides to every story and dog training methods are no exception. People are succeeding and failing with both modern and traditional training methods. Choosing a dog training approach is not just about checking what works. Instead you should focus on what feels right for both your puppy and you. To make a decision, ask yourself some important questions about the method you consider: is it safe? Is it effective? Is it going to improve owner’s relationship with the pet? If you find the method with positive answer to all these questions, go for it!
