Female Dogs as Pets

Owning a pet means being responsible, patient and caring. You have to monitor your pet’s health, eating habits and over-all well being. Therefore it is important to choose your dog wisely. If you have decided which breed you want your furry companion to be, your next decision should be its gender. Do not underestimate the power of the dog’s gender, because it can significantly influence its behavior. The difference between genders is not only in size and the color of  cute dog collars. Of course, it’s a question of your previous experiences and your preferences and there is a great possibility that your own dog does not have characteristics common for its gender. However, we will now focus on typical female dog’s characteristics.

  • Female dogs are independent and they want to control the situation. If they need your attention and seek for an affection, they will come to you. On the other hand, once they fulfill their desire, they will move away.
  • Even though territoriality is something usually related to male dogs, females are also territorial and they do mark in similar to males. In fact, after spaying, male dogs slowly lose their marking behavior, females do not. They simply continue to mark for their entire lifetime.
  • In case of stray dogs, if you see a pack, there is a great possibility that the leader of the pack is a female dog. In fact, females are commonly Alpha dogs. Stubborn they are and, as mentioned above, they do need to be in control of the situation, to respond as quickly as possible to any possible challenge.
  • Female dogs can be moody and their behavior might be quite changeable, unless if you do spay them. So, keep that in mind when deciding whether to spay your pet or not.
  • Females are less friendly and affectionate than male dogs and it is noticeable even in puppies, but with age it becomes more and more obvious.
