If Havana Silk Dog senses that it is stronger minded than its owner, it will not listen and respond to commands. On the other hand, too harsh discipline is also not their cup of tea. When owning this cute little dog, you should be calm, yet to be naturally authoritative. Luckily, they do not bark a lot, or at least they are able to be taught not to do that. Despite their size, Havanese are usually neither shy nor cowards. Their height is commonly about 20 to 28 centimeters ( 8 to 11 inches) and they weigh 3 to 6 kg (7 to 13 pounds). Havana Silk Dogs are very long-lived and healthy, but they can eventually have some health problems. They are prone to poodle eye, dislocated knee caps, bilateral or unilateral deafness, PRA, hip dysplasia, dry skin. Approximately they live 15 years.
Havana Silk dog prefers apartment life and can live without a yard. However, they are very playful and require plenty of physical exercise. Daily walk is a must, but show a plenty of indoor activity. When it comes to grooming, coat can be clipped short and then they require less care. In case the coat is kept long, brushing and combing two or three times per week is needed. There are specialized lotions for preventing the hair from splitting. Eyes and ears should be checked on regular basis, because they can be prone to infections.
