Housebreaking a Puppy

puppytrainingWhen a new puppy comes into your home, it immediately changes your life – in a good way. However, nothing is absolutely perfect, so there are some problems a new puppy brings. First of all, every owner worries about whether a new puppy will get the proper care. Having a puppy is similar to having a baby, it requires lot of patience and love. How to housebreak a puppy fast and without a stress? We’ll try to help. Housebreaking should begin as soon as owners bring a puppy home. The fact is that a puppy needs to relieve itself approx. 6 times a day. A full stomach puts pressure on bladder and colon and therefore owners should take out their puppy immediately after each meal. Puppy will defecate five to 30 minutes after it eats. So, making an eating schedule and paying attention to the clock is a key to train a puppy to maintain regular trips outside. And don’t forget to reward the good behavior with a small treat or just a quiet approval.

But with all owner’s attention and organizing, from time to time, a puppy will relieve itself inside the house, on the floor or the carpet. It is important to understand that dogs don’t think our way. They do want to please and not to make us unhappy, so how do they continue to act bad if owner shows disapproval of that mess on the floor? Dogs do understand that mess is what upsets the owner, but to them, the act and the mess are two unrelated things. So, what to do about it? The trick is to catch a puppy in the act and to show disapproval. Hitting a puppy should be avoided, because a firm “NO! Don’t do this in the house!” is enough for him to understand that owner is unhappy. Immediately after a puppy is caught in the act, he should be taken outside to the appropriate place.
