How to Prevent Your Dog from Getting Lost

As a dog owner, you have to love and protect your furry companion. Although it’s easy to love them, protecting them can be quite a tricky part. Let’s face it, our four-legged family members simply like to explore and, sometimes, they get lost. Also, purebreds are at risk of getting snatched by a dognapper. What can we do to prevent our dog’s pic ends up stapled to a telephone pole?

1 – Keep an eye on your pets! Don’t just think your puppy is playing in a fenced-in backyard, but make sure you’re able to see where he is at all times. Don’t tie your dog up to the parking meter outside the coffee shop while you’re chatting with your friends; your pet could chew through leash, slip the collar or even be stolen.

2- Buying a good leash is so recommended. Even if your four-legged friend is following at your heels when you’re running errands, a rabbit or squirrel can cause your pet to bolt down the street and you probably won’t catch him. Off-leash parks are great for exercise and fun, but make sure the one you choose is enclosed. When out in the wild, I also recommend a leash.

3- A well-fitting collar is also a good line of defense. Not only does it keep your pet from slipping out of it, but it also provides an easy way to ID your beloved animal. Since there are so many fancy dog collars available on the market, it shouldn’t be difficult to find the one for your puppy. Keep in mind that it needs to be functional before fashionable. Make sure you regularly check the fit of the collar as it’s likely to fay, crack or stretch out over time, making it less secure.

4- Microchipping your dogs is painless and it involves implanting a microchip under their skin. After the procedure, your pet can be identified with a scanner, even if it loses his collar. Microchips for pets provide excellent legal resourse in case a dispute over who owns the lost dog arises.

In order to prevent your beloved animal from getting lost or snapped, I recommend all above-mentioned ways together. Better be safe than heartbroken!
