It might surely be unpleasant if you happen to be one of these animal lovers with an allergy that prevents you from petting your four-legged friend or caring for it. That, of course, is without having to think about medication dosages or side effects which come with any physical contact. But don’t worry, there are some types of animals and dog breeds that produce less allergens and thus are more appropriate for people with health problems. Surprised? Well, that would be normal because even after so many years of companionship with animals, people still think that the main reason for their allergies is fur when actually they are most sensitive to their pet’s shed dead skin, saliva or urine. So, when you are considering a pet either choose one that doesn’t shed a lot or a one that requires regular grooming – so much, as a matter of fact, that their dander gets entirely washed away.
Such a pet is the Portuguese water dog because its fur indeed requires regular maintenance and by thus becomes one of the most appropriate pets. This breed is also loving, intelligent and obedient and they also have excellent agility skills which makes it the perfect pet. Another good choice for the allergic pet owner would be the Kerry blue terriers, the Bichon frise or the Standard poodle. These breeds are considered as a low-allergenic because of their soft wavy coats that shade much less dander than other breeds. They are also very energetic, fun-loving and could easily fit into a family with children. What better than that?
For cat lovers allergic reactions are almost unavoidable because they are a result of a glycoprotein called Fel d 1 and it is present in cat saliva, skin excretions and fur. However, the Sphynx cat is often recommended by experts because it could at least ease the allergy sufferers a little. This is because they don’t scatter allergens with their fur as well. Another good choice is the Devon rex cat. They have less fur than some other cat breeds and thus they do not need to clean and lick it – and by that they don’t scatter the allergens in their saliva on their skin and hair.
Another perfect pet for the allergic person could be the Syrian hamsters. Yes, they do have fur and, yes, they could cause allergic reactions due to their dander but at the same time they need a surprisingly small space for living. And as such, they don’t have constant interaction with the surroundings of your home. For the same reason you could choose to get some gerbils, chinchillas, guinea pigs, mice or rats. And last but not least, do not forget lizards because they are hairless and they need relatively low maintenance.
However, if you are determined to get a cat or a dog as a pet make sure you consult a doctor who could recommend you an appropriate breed that wouldn’t cause an allergy attack.
