Challenges of Going Organic with Pets

doggysbakery 1Before buying or adopting a puppy or a kitten, especially if first-time pet owner, people cautiously step back because they know owning an animal requires effort, time and money. Nowadays owners are facing another dilemma: organic or non-organic pet food?

As an old-school pet owner, I have fed my furry companions with supermarket food, raw meat and eggs, table scraps, “natural” food ordered online etc. Well, it’s not like we had the choice to go organic decades ago. But, as soon as I went organic quite far away, I started to wonder should I go organic with my pets, too. And here’s what I’ve found.

Going organic with our pets brings tremendous benefits. However, it does not make you better than other pet owners. The world we live in is the world of transition. It’s hard to focus on living as one with nature, since we migrate that much and, of course, travel a lot. It’s good to think about your pet’s food, what’s good for your puppy or a kitten, what should you avoid and to try to avoid conventional medications as much as possible. But, if you want to say goodbye to conventional medicine, you need to find another option: alternative, holistic approach. So, if you want to go that way, try to find a holistic veterinarian in your neighborhood. If the closest alternative vet is too far from your home, it’s better to try with a conventional one, since any care is better than no care at all.

If you are considering going organic with your pet, head down the path of organic, but with a little bit of conventional. Do you really have enough time to crush the right amount of vitamins and herbs for your dog’s breed? Do you always have time to make some homemade biscuits? If your answer is no, do it whenever you can, but when you just don’t have enough time, provide your pet with conventional, store bought supplies. You can always add some organic ingredients to your dog’s dish and you’ll make the meal healthier. One action at a time is a good way towards a more natural, simpler and gentler way to treat ourselves and our furry companions. The most important thing is to care for your pets, to love them and to give them support they need to grow up and live their lives happily and healthy.
