If you are willing to adopt and care for a pet bird, with some research, you can find the bird species that is perfect for you. You cannot just walk into a pet store and get the first bird that looks nice to you. On the contrary, you should look for basic facts about their behavior, health and living conditions. Pet forums might be the place to start your research, because you can read other owner’s experiences, impressions and advices. A finch is a bird pet lots of people choose to adopt because it requires minimal care. Even though finches are independent, there are also things you should do to provide your bird pet a long, healthy and happy life.
Finches need room to exercise, so their cage should allow them at least twenty inches of flying height. If you keep your bird pet in a cage that is smaller than this, you risk your lovely bird to become more prone to disease, bored, lethargic and overweight. A cage should include swings, bells, ladders, mirrors and similar toys to enable your finch to stay stimulated and active. A bird cage should be cleaned on regular basis.
When it comes to diet, a bag of bird food is alright, but give your finch some minerals and natural fresh foods. Take care of fresh food – if your finch does not eat it, remove it from its cage to avoid the spoilage. For better digestion, supply your bird pet with charcoal and grit. Clean, fresh drinking water is a must. Also, keep in mind that a finch is a very clean bird and therefore a small shallow dish of warm water will enable your bird to bathe in if it decides to do so. And, even if your finch is not breeding, you should provide it a nesting box.
