Gone are the days when we used to think not much about the special needs of our pets and give them the same food which we used to eat. A lot of studies have been and are being conducted about pet health and what we can do to keep them in top health condition. Thus pet parents are getting more and more aware of the fact that their beloved pets need something special and not the one humans use. Here are some pet nutrition dos and don’ts that pet parents would love to remember.
According to the American Animal Hospital Association, good nutrition improves both, quality and quantity of pets’ life. Therefore as a pet parent, you are obliged to give your pet the right nutrition to let her/him live a long life full of health and fun. Especially when holidays are around the corner, our pets will need the same care regarding what they would eat, as we will.
Cranberry Sauce: Cranberry sauce is a big holiday favorite and is safe for most pets; however, as it contains a lot of sugar, you should give it only in little quantity to pets.
Turkey: You can give a small bite of turkey as long as it is cooked skinless and boneless to your furry family member.
Green Beans: They on their own are safe for your pets as long as they are not made with some other ingredient like green bean casserole.
Macaroni and Cheese: Actually it’s best to offer your pet only macaroni. Also they will love plain pasta.
Mashed Potatoes: Mashed potatoes are safe for your pets, but only when not added with other ingredients like gravy, sour cream and cheese.
Grapes and Raisins: Fresh grapes and their dried out versions are highly toxic to pets and can even lead to kidney failure in dogs.
Alliums: You should not give your pet anything with alliums including scallions, onions, leeks and garlic.
Chocolate: Don’t give your pet chocolate and not even foods containing chocolate, like cookies containing chocolate chips. Stay away especially from baking chocolate.
Xylitol: Any food made with xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can be toxic to your pet.
