Snakes as Pets – How to Choose the Right Snake Type

While some people find snakes frightening and dangerous, others adore them, keep them as pets and claim they are wonderful beings. If you consider keeping a snake as a pet, first you have to decide which type of pet snake is perfect for you. If you ask several snake keepers to list you the best types of pet snakes, you will get several different lists. Everybody has their own preferences, experiences and opinions. Keep in mind that you will definitely need to find unique pet shops to find pet supplies for your lovely pet snake.

However, before deciding what snake species you will keep as a pet, you should think of several things. Behavior or temperament, first of all. If you are a novice in keeping snakes as pets, choose those who have good temperaments. What does it mean? In general, good temperament means they are easy to tame and reluctant bite (the ball python, the corn snake, the gopher snake, the king snake…).

Regardless the species you will choose to keep, snakes eat rodents and not all the snakes like frozen or thawed rodents. Even though it is easier to buy rodents in bulk this way than to handle them, not all the pet snakes will accept thawed or frozen rodents on a consistent basis. Average adult size is also something you should consider, because if you want your pet to be healthy and happy, snakes have to be able to stretch out 2/3 of their body length inside their own cages. So, if the average adult size of the snake you want to keep as pet is about 6 feet, you should provide your pet a cage that is around 4 feet long. If you have a limited space in your home, you should choose smaller snakes.

Unless you are not a professional snake keeper, you should stick to those low-maintenance species, those who are not difficult to be kept in captivity. So, choose those that will live healthy and happy if all their basic needs such as appropriate temperature, regular feeding, enough fresh water, clean cage, proper taming etc. are met.
